A price guarantee locks your electricity rate for a set period, so it pays off mainly when you value planning security and expect prices to rise. If you can shift your usage or want to benefit from falling wholesale prices, a flexible or dynamic tariff often serves you better.

Short answer: it depends on two things

A price guarantee is worth it if (1) you want a predictable monthly bill and (2) you believe market prices will climb during your contract. If either is untrue, it usually isn't. The guarantee removes upside as well as downside: you are protected from increases, but you cannot profit if prices fall. Treat it as insurance against rising prices — sensible for risk-averse households, less so for anyone who can flex their consumption.

Know which type you're getting

Not every 'guarantee' covers your whole bill. A limited price guarantee (eingeschränkte Preisgarantie) fixes only the supplier's energy portion and still lets grid fees, taxes and levies pass through — so your price can still change. A full price guarantee (Vollpreisgarantie) locks the total working price but is rarer and often priced higher. Always check the contract wording for exactly which components are frozen and for how long.

When a price guarantee makes sense

Choose one if you want a stable, plannable budget, dislike surprises on your annual statement, and are comfortable committing to a fixed term. It suits households with steady, hard-to-shift consumption and anyone who would rather pay a small premium for certainty than gamble on the market. It's also reasonable heading into a period where you genuinely expect wholesale prices to rise.

When to skip it

Skip the guarantee if you can move consumption to cheaper hours — for example with a battery, heat pump, EV charging or smart controls. Flexible and dynamic tariffs let you buy power when the exchange price is low, which a fixed guarantee cannot do. If you expect prices to fall, or want to keep the freedom to switch suppliers quickly, a guaranteed fixed contract can lock you into an above-market rate.

Read the fine print before you sign

Check the guarantee's duration (does it end before the contract does?), the exact components it covers, the minimum term and notice period, and any bonus that only applies in year one. A long guarantee tied to a long lock-in reduces your flexibility, so weigh the security you gain against the option to leave. Compare the guaranteed working price against current tariffs so you know the premium you're paying for certainty.
