Remote PV monitoring means continuously checking a solar plant's output from anywhere — comparing what it actually produces against what it should produce, and alerting you when the two diverge. You don't need to be on site: the data comes from the inverter and, where required, from the metering and grid-control connection.

What remote PV monitoring actually does

It reads live data from your inverter (and optional string- or module-level sensors) and compares real output against a physical expectation calculated from your plant's capacity, orientation, and the irradiance it actually receives. Any shortfall shows up as a concrete number — kWh lost — instead of a guess. The core score is the Performance Ratio (PR): how much of the usable sunlight the plant converts after all losses.

How to set it up (step by step)

1) Connect your inverter to the internet (LAN, Wi-Fi, or a data logger/gateway). 2) Register the plant in the manufacturer or third-party monitoring portal and enter capacity, tilt, and azimuth. 3) Add an irradiance reference (on-site sensor or modelled satellite/weather data) so expected yield can be computed. 4) Configure alert thresholds and notification channels (email, app, SMS). 5) Verify the first days of data against a clear-sky day to confirm the baseline is correct.

What the alerts can catch

Good monitoring distinguishes fault types by their data signature: a slow, gradual drift points to soiling or shading, while a sudden step-down points to hardware — a tripped string, a blown fuse, or an inverter fault. Separating the two means you send the right crew instead of a blind maintenance visit.

Monitoring vs. on-site inspection

Remote monitoring tells you *that* and roughly *how much* a plant is underperforming, in real time and continuously. It does not tell you exactly *which* cell is broken. For that, pair it with a periodic on-site check — for example a drone thermography (infrared) flight that images every module for hotspots and dead cells without scaffolding or shutting the plant down.

Is remote monitoring legally required?

Monitoring itself is not mandated, but in Germany remote controllability is: under §9 EEG 2023, every PV plant from 25 kW upward must be remotely controllable by the grid operator (FRE). A missing registration can jeopardise the EEG remuneration — with market-premium plants, payout can be blocked. Practical monitoring usually rides on the same grid connection, so treat both together.

What to check before you buy a solution

Confirm it computes expected yield from real irradiance (not just plots raw output), reports Performance Ratio, separates soiling from hardware faults, sends push alerts on deviation, and supports your inverter brand's data interface. Portal-only dashboards that show production without a benchmark can't tell you what you're losing.
